What each line costs, how long a haul really takes end to end, and what your country will charge you on arrival.

Short answer: economy runs about 12–25 days, standard 8–15, express 3–7. Add 2–5 days at the start for the seller to reach the warehouse in China, plus however long you take to approve QC photos. A realistic end-to-end figure for a first economy haul is three to five weeks.

The timeline, honestly
- Seller to warehouse: 2–5 days. A domestic hop inside China. Fast.
- QC photos: as long as you take. The warehouse photographs the item; nothing moves until you approve it. This is the step people forget when their parcel "isn't moving".
- Consolidation: a few days. Your items are packed into one box. Tracking genuinely does not update here, and that is normal.
- International leg: the number in the table above.
- Customs and local delivery: a few days, longer if your parcel is selected for inspection.
Volumetric weight, and why shoes cost more than they weigh
Carriers charge on whichever is greater: actual weight, or volume converted to a weight. A pair of shoes in its box is light but bulky, so you pay for the air. Ask for the box to be removed at repack — it usually saves more on the line than the repack costs.
Customs, by region
- European Union
- Since July 2026 the EU applies a flat per-item-category duty on low-value parcels from outside the union, on top of your national VAT rate. The old practice of low-value parcels slipping through untaxed is over. Budget for it rather than hoping — a parcel held at customs costs more in time than the duty does in money.
- United Kingdom
- Import VAT applies at your national rate, and duty applies above a value threshold. Couriers add a clearance handling charge on top, which is often the part people forget.
- United States
- The US has historically had a high de-minimis threshold, which is why American buyers often pay nothing. Thresholds and their exemptions have been changing, so check the current position before a large haul rather than assuming.
- Canada
- A low de-minimis threshold means most hauls attract GST/HST plus a courier handling fee. Canadian buyers should assume they will pay something.
- Australia
- GST applies to imported goods. It is frequently collected at the point of sale or by the carrier rather than at the border.
Do not ask an agent to under-declare a parcel's value. That is asking someone to make a false customs declaration on your behalf, and the realistic downside is the parcel being seized rather than a smaller tax bill.

Why is my parcel not moving?
The commonest reason is that it has not actually shipped yet — it is sitting in the warehouse waiting for you to approve QC photos or submit it for shipping. After that, the second commonest is the consolidation phase, where tracking genuinely does not update for several days.
Which shipping line should I pick?
For a first haul of ordinary clothing, economy is usually right — the price gap to express is larger than most people expect and the difference is a week or two. Pick express when the item is time-sensitive or valuable enough that a longer window in transit worries you.
Can I avoid customs charges?
No, and you should not try. Under-declaring a parcel's value is the buyer asking the agent to make a false customs declaration, and the downside is the parcel being seized. Budget for import tax as part of the haul cost.
